SPACE training

What is SPACE training?

SPACE (Supporting Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions therapy) is an innovative, evidence-based approach developed by Dr. Eli Liebowitz at Yale University SPACE can help with OCD, and related anxiety disorders and can also be used for young adults who are experiencing “failure to launch” This therapy, focuses on coaching parents while gradually removing accommodation.

Why does it work?

Frequently, children and teens look for comfort from their parents to navigate anxious emotions. As a caring parent, your first instinct is to comfort your child and alleviate their distress. If you’re a parent dealing with an anxious child or teenager, you’re likely familiar with the far-reaching effects of your child’s anxiety within the family dynamic.
While these actions or accommodations may help your child regulate in the short term, they may increase anxiety in the long term. Additionally, your child is not learning independent anxiety management tools. For example, parents might change their schedule and repeatedly reassure or avoid certain situations. Reducing parent accommodations helps children and young adults confront challenges and this fosters enduring resilience and self-assurance.
